With over 25 years of success building ships on the Gulf Coast, Austal USA has a balanced portfolio of steel and aluminum surface ship contracts for the U.S. Navy (Navy) and U.S. Coast Guard (Coast Guard), having delivered 34 ships to the Navy since 2009.

The company’s contract backlog is valued at over $10 billion, including a $3.2 billion contract for up to seven Navy TAGOS-25-class ocean surveillance ships.

Austal USA’s surface ships team reduces cost and schedule risk by expediting the ordering and receiving material process through leveraging an extensive network of original equipment manufacturers (OEM), suppliers, and vendors.

To date, over $560 million has been invested in the expansion of Austal USA's state-of-the-art ship manufacturing facility. The 165-acre campus on the east bank of the Mobile River includes four final assembly bays, a 717,000 square foot Module Manufacturing Facility that includes both steel and aluminum assembly lines, and a Vessel Completion Yard that serves as the final location for its ships prior to acceptance trials, delivery and sail away.

By early 2027, construction will be complete on a new surface ship assembly building that will occupy four and a half acres and will be approximately 400 feet long by 480 feet wide providing over 192,000 square feet of new covered manufacturing space. It will consist of three bays enabling erection of the Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutter and Navy’s TAGOS-25 ocean surveillance steel ships. The expansion project includes a ship lift capable of lifting and launching vessels more than 18,000 long tons.
