Since 2022, Austal USA has been a key partner in advancing the U.S. Navy’s submarine production capacity through the fabrication and outfitting of critical module components for both the Virginia-class and Columbia-class programs. Working in strategic partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), Austal USA plays a vital role in strengthening the Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) and enhancing America’s undersea deterrence capabilities.
Leveraging state-of-the-art steel manufacturing facilities and lean production techniques, Austal USA constructs and outfits Command and Control Systems Modules (CCSM) for both submarine classes and Electronic Deck Modules (EDM) and Outboard Payload Deck (OPD) modules for Virginia Class submarines. These advanced fabrication efforts directly support the Navy’s goal of sustaining a steady and scalable production cadence to meet future fleet demands.
To expand its capacity and further strengthen the SIB, Austal USA is constructing the Manufacturing Module Facility 3 (MMF3), a new, purpose-built manufacturing center designed for submarine module production. Spanning 369,600 square feet of indoor manufacturing space, the facility will include a machine shop, material storage, assembly areas, and waterfront enhancements to enable barge transport of completed modules. Once operational, MMF3 will play a critical role in meeting the Navy’s objective of delivering one Columbia-class and two Virginia-class submarines per year.
The new building will provide 369,600 square feet of indoor manufacturing space purpose-built to manufacture submarine modules. The production from this building will support the U.S. Navy’s goal of delivering one Columbia-class and two Virginia-class submarines annually. It will include a material storage area, machine shop, assembly area, and waterfront improvements to support the shipment of the completed modules via barge.
