Austal USA is a ship manufacturer headquartered in Mobile, Ala., with service centers in San Diego and Singapore. In addition to Austal USA's shipbuilding locations, the company also established a technology center in Charlottesville, Va., that oversees and operates the Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence, the U.S. Navy’s flagship for additive manufacturing supporting the construction and sustainment of the fleet.

With over one million square feet of indoor manufacturing space and the most modern steel panel line in the shipbuilding industry, Austal USA manufactures both aluminum and steel ships and is under contract for several key maritime defense programs for both the Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. Austal USA leverages a moving module production line, suitable for serial production, and strict adherence to lean manufacturing principles to consistently deliver on-schedule and on-budget. 

As a key member of the Navy submarine industrial base, Austal USA builds modules for both the Virginia and Columbia-class submarine programs.  The company also supports Navy unmanned vessel programs leveraging its advanced autonomous machinery control system.

Our Story

Since its founding in 1999, Austal USA has grown to be one of the Nation’s most advanced shipbuilders. Investing over $500 million in infrastructure development, Austal USA operates a modern manufacturing facility in Mobile, Alabama, with over one million square feet of indoor production space, where the company is building a balanced portfolio of steel and aluminum ships and cutters for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.  By early 2027, the company will have added over 561,000 square feet of covered manufacturing space with the completion of a three-bay erection hall and a submarine module manufacturing facility expansion project, a $750 million investment.

In 2021, Austal USA added a full-service waterfront repair yard in San Diego, California, adjacent to the Naval base.  The facility includes a 9,000-ton floating dry dock.

Austal USA also operates an advanced technology center in Charlottesville, Virginia, that is a leader in cutting-edge technology implementation for defense and maritime applications. 

The company has delivered 34 ships to the U.S. Navy and has a $10 billion contract backlog that includes Navy and Coast Guard surface ships and module production for submarines and aircraft carriers.

Austal USA believes that a knowledgeable employee is a valuable employee. Supporting this philosophy, Austal USA provides a variety of training programs for all levels of capability from apprenticeship opportunities, to craft expertise improvement, to leadership development. 

All employees and leaders participate in a day-long new employee orientation followed up with an annual half-day compliance training program. Both programs provide employees and leaders with tools and resources to enhance teamwork, communication and awareness of important daily business skills and knowledge which aid to maintain our organizational performance.

Austal USA takes pride in the safe working environment that we provide for our employees both locally and at our satellite offices around the world.

Since 2008 we have proven our commitment to safety time and time again by maintaining a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) that has been well below the respective Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) Industry average assigned for shipbuilding.  Our merits and performance have earned Austal USA multiple safety performance-based awards issued by both the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) and the American Equity Underwriters (AEU).
